Place a plastic putty knife on the windowsill at a 45-degree angle and push it forward to scrape off the gel and the wood stain. Shake the removed material into a bucket to collect it and repeat the process to remove a much of the gel as possible with the putty knife.

Using a rag to apply stain, you’ll both apply and then remove any excess stain in one step. You have better control as to how much stain you apply and how you distribute it. Using a rag also eliminates the bubbles you get when you apply Polyshades with a brush.

This removes any start/stop marks and bubbles. Before applying the second coat, sand with the 220 fine grit sanding paper – very lightly! And then remove sanding dust and apply the second thin coat as you did the first coat. Additional coats can be added to deepen the color.
Can you stain over PolyShades?
No, a standard oil stain won’t work on top of a polyurethane coat. Instead, the stain will just wipe off and leave no color behind after applying it. Standard oil-based wood stain works by seeping into the wood, but the coat of poly won’t allow penetration.

Yes! Staining on top of older stain is perfectly fine. You will need to understand your specific project and plan before you begin but staining on top of old stain is fairly simple. As we mentioned earlier, staining on top of old stain works best if you want a darker stain.
