bolt and nut size chart
To measure the diameter of screws and bolts, you measure the distance from the outer thread on one side to the outer thread on the other side. This is called the major diameter and will usually be the proper size of the bolt.
What is M in bolt size?
The letter ‘M’ indicates that this bolt uses a metric thread. The number ‘8’ refers to the nominal diameter of the bolt shaft in millimeters. The number 1.0 is the thread pitch of the bolt, which is the distance between threads, in millimeters. And the final figure, 20, is the length in millimeters.
How do you size a nut?
Place the end of a measuring tape on one of the flat sides of the nut’s outer perimeter. Stretch the tape measure across the nut’s diameter to the flat-side directly across from the one your pulling from. If the nut is metric, count the number of lines on the tape measure to find the measurement.
Does M12 mean 12mm?
The first half (M12), is the size measurement (metric) taken across the outside diameter of the thread (which in this case is 12mm). The second half is the thread pitch, which is the measurement of threads/inch (which in this case is 1.75).
Is M10 same as 10mm?
If the size is M10 x 25, that would mean that the diameter is 10 mm. Since there is no thread pitch listed, the fastener is assumed to have a coarse thread. The 25 indicated a length of 25 mm. A matching nut would be labeled M10, which also doesn’t require a thread pitch since it’s a course thread fastener.
What do bolt size numbers mean?
The number 1 or number larger than one, or number one or number larger than one followed by a fraction, is the diameter of the shaft. The number following the hyphen is the number of threads per inch; that is, the number of threads on the shaft itself, per inch of shaft length. Same as for smaller parts.
What size is M6 in MM?
M6 Threads
M6 refers to a metric 6 mm screw. The outside diameter of the threads is 6 mm. The standard metric rack screw is actually an M6 x 0.1 mm.
What size nut is M10?
M10 nuts have a diameter of 10 mm and are one of the most common sizes of nut available. We stock different types of 10mm nut such as tee nuts, wing nuts and standard 10mm locking nuts.
How do you measure bolt size?
How to Measure the Size of a Bolt
Step 1: Measure the shank’s diameter. The shaft of the bolt is called the shank, and its diameter is the first dimension used to describe a bolt size. Step 2: Determine the thread pitch. Step 3: Measure the length of the shank. Step 6: Measure the length of the threaded portion of the bolt.
What diameter is M12?
M12 bolts are a metric sized bolt with a 12mm thread diameter.
Does an M12 nut fit an M12 bolt?
M12 nut is inner diameter of nut and M12 washer is M12 clearance hole for inner diameter. So they should all go together nicely. A quick check down B&Q would confirm.
Is 12mm and M12 the same?
Yes. M12 is a 12mm diameter thread. You have to be sure the thread pitch measured in threads per millimeter (1.5 here) is the same as what u need.
